Microsoft and AT&T further collaborate on IoT solutions with Azure Sphere

AT&T and Microsoft’s cloudy collaboration continues: the two companies have announced the launch of a new integrated IoT offering to enable further global connectivity.

The enterprise-focused solution will integrate with Azure Sphere, an application platform with built-in features for internet-connected devices, alongside AT&T’s core network.

Potential use cases include restaurants and cafes, as well as hospitals and manufacturing plants, being able to retrofit existing equipment into smart devices. Companies who utilise the offering can connect existing assets to the cloud and to Azure IoT Central. ‘A wide range of industries can rapidly deploy IoT applications relying on the combined security benefits of the AT&T cellular network with Azure Sphere device security’, the companies add.

“Our work with AT&T is a prime example of how the convergence of secure cloud computing and network technology helps businesses unlock new customer value and continuously simplify every aspect of our personal and professional lives,” said Corey Sanders, corporate vice president of Microsoft Solutions in a statement.

This is the latest in what appears to be an increasingly fruitful partnership between the two firms – and another interesting marker when it comes to how the hyperscale cloud providers continue to work with leading telcos.

In November, Microsoft and AT&T announced a solution where AT&T’s growing 5G network would be able to run Azure services, with select preview availability for network edge compute (NEC) technology. The two companies had initiated their partnership earlier in 2019.
