Vodafone is to use Google Cloud to build a new data platform and migrate its SAP workloads – in an extension of the companies’ partnership and another key telecoms use case.
The two companies will jointly build the platform ‘with the added capability of processing and moving huge volumes of data globally from multiple systems into the cloud’, the press materials noted. Vodafone will host its SAP environment, as well as ‘all big data and business intelligence workloads’ on Google Cloud.
The Nucleus data platform will house a new system, called Dynamo, which will help the operator offer customers personalised products and services. The system is touted as processing up to 50 terabytes of data per day, with Nucleus and Dynamo claimed as industry firsts.
Vodafone has been a customer of Google Cloud since 2019, when the companies announced Google would host Neuron, Vodafone’s ‘strategic cloud platform for data analytics, business intelligence and machine learning.’
“Vodafone is building a powerful foundation for a digital future,” said Johan Wibergh, Vodafone chief technology officer in a statement. “We have vast amounts of data which, when securely processed and made available across our footprint using the collective power of Vodafone and Google Cloud’s engineering expertise, will transform our services, to our customers and governments, and the societies where they live and serve.”
This is not the only industry-first claim for telecoms in the cloud realm of recent times. Last month, as this publication reported, DISH selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider. Nothing new on the surface there, but the agreement for DISH to construct its 5G network on AWS was touted as a first for the industry.
For the telecoms industry, the blueprint for working with the largest cloud providers is now solidified, as this publication has reported passim. With the need for modernisation on the telecoms side, and the promise of 5G and edge computing technologies, collaboration is the watchword.
